8 Ways to Enhance Helicopter Training and Reduce Fatal Accidents
Many fatal helicopter accidents involve causes from actions or non-actions that may have occurred months or years before during initial or recurrent instruction sessions. The U.S. Helicopter Safety Team (www.USHST.org) has determined that these training initiatives could improve safety and potentially save lives.
Promote the Teaching of Threat and Error Management – Traditional decision-making models focus largely on reactive and proactive means of flight crew situation management. Threat and Error Management (TEM), however, focuses on a predictive process to eliminate threats and errors before, during, and after each flight. Since its inception and introduction to airline operations, TEM has, as part of larger safety efforts, drastically reduced total accidents within the worldwide airline community. HST After 10 Years: A Worldwide Reduction in Helicopter Accidents
The International Helicopter Safety Team (www.IHST.org) reached its 10-year milestone this year with deep reductions in civil helicopter accidents in key regions throughout the globe and with an effective safety education effort that continues to spread throughout the industry.
The successful effort to reduce helicopter accidents was applauded today by industry leaders at Heli-Expo with a re-commitment to the IHST’s efforts and continuing support for the IHST’s government and industry partnership to enhance safety.
Prior to the IHST’s formation in 2006, the number of worldwide civil helicopter accidents was rising at a rate of 2.5 percent per year.
Since 2006, while the worldwide civil helicopter fleet has grown by 30 percent,
the number of accidents worldwide has decreased in key global regions from 24 percent up to more than 50 percent,
and the accident rate in key regions has decreased within a range of 40 to 60 percent. [Read More...]
In its quest to bring the global helicopter accident rate to zero, the International Helicopter Safety Team (IHST) has analyzed more than 1,000 U.S. civil helicopter accidents and their causes. Having done so, the IHST’s investigators have come to two clear conclusions: (1) Helicopter accidents are ultimately caused by incorrect human decisions, and (2) the evidence shows that reducing the accident rate to zero is actually possible.
“After going through the NTSB investigations in detail, one thing has become obvious: No one has invented a new way to crash a helicopter,” says Matt Zuccaro, IHST co-chair and president of Helicopter Association International. “The reasons helicopters crashed ten years ago remain the same today, and all of their causes can be traced back to the people who flew, serviced, or managed the helicopters.” [Read More...]
