HAI Announces 2019 ROTOR Photo and Video Contest Winners

Tom Houquet
Limburg, Belgium

In the Photographer’s Words: The crew of a Portuguese Air Force Merlin EH-101 visited the Belgian Air Force Days air show at Kleine-Brogel Air Base, where it was one of the highlights at the static show. Normally based at Montijo, Portugal, the helicopter flies with the 751 Squadron, where it performs search-and-rescue operations. The photograph was taken during an air-to-air photoshoot from the open ramp of a Short SC.7 Skyvan with a Canon 7D Mark II camera with a 24-105 mm lens.

Alexandria, Va. (February 14, 2019) – Helicopter Association International (HAI) is pleased to announce today the winners of the 2019 ROTOR Photo and Video Contest. Every year, excellent photographers and videographers, both amateur and professional, submit photos and videos in a variety of categories that represent the helicopter industry.

In addition to cash prizes, the winning photos and videos will also be on display at HAI HELI-EXPO 2019 in Atlanta, March 4–7, where thousands of attendees will get a chance to see these examples of fine helicopter media. Winning photos will also be published in the Winter 2019 issue of ROTOR magazine.

This year’s entries brought us dynamic helicopter footage, but one video stood out above the rest. Funded entirely through public donations, Wales Air Ambulance’s mission is to “provide air cover to relieve illness and injury wherever and whenever anybody in Wales needs us.” This short film, shot in 2018 across Wales, showcases the organization’s work serving the community. The formation shoot was filmed in Welshpool in June 2018, and the rest in Dafen throughout the year.

  • Grand Prize Winner: Laura Francis, Wales, United Kingdom
Congratulations to the winners and thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s contest. Please plan to participate in the 2020 ROTOR Photo Contest by submitting your entries at contest.rotor.org, beginning July 1, 2019.
