NTSB Report Released: Sanders, KY

On June 5, 2018, about 1245 eastern daylight time, a Bell 206B helicopter, N518Z, sustained substantial damage after a loss of engine power and subsequent hard landing near Sanders, Kentucky. The commercial pilot and sole passenger sustained minor injuries. The helicopter was registered to and operated by Due North Aviation LLC., under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed for the cross country aerial observation flight, which originated from the Madison Municipal Airport (IMS), Madison, Indiana about 1205 and was destined for a private field near Mt Orab, Ohio.

Historic Sycamore Helicopter Flies Home

Australian Army extends contract with Rockwell Collins for avionics support on CH-47F Chinooks

PARIS – Rockwell Collins has been selected by the Australian Army to provide extended avionics support for its fleet of CH-47F Chinook helicopters through a performance-based logistics (PBL) contract. NTSB Report Released: Olympia, WA

On May 25, 2018, about 0947 Pacific daylight time, a Bell UH-1H, helicopter, N111DR, collided with terrain shortly after takeoff near Olympia, Washington. The pilot sustained minor injuries, and sole passenger sustained serious injuries. The helicopter, which was registered to and operated by Northwest Helicopters Inc. as a maintenance test flight, and under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91, was substantially damaged. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident, and no flight plan was filed. The local flight departed Olympia Heliport (0WN4), Olympia, Washington, about 0946.

Kawak receives STC’s for new CH-47 Chinook Internal firefighting tank system

Bend, Oregon – Kawak Aviation has received FAA Supplemental Type Certification (STC) for its CH-47D Chinook aerial liquid delivery system (ALDS) and auxiliary hydraulic system. Working with customer Billings Flying Service of Billings, Montana, Kawak has achieved a more effective internal tank firefighting system. The 2,500-US gallon (9,463-liter) tank fills in under 40 seconds and can release a full load of water in 3 seconds. The key to the success of this new system is the fully independent 50hp hydraulic system, all new refill pump, and unique water tank door design.

Aircraft Propeller Service (APS) Awarded MRO Contract by Helibras/Helicopters of Brazil, Inc., an Airbus Helicopter Subsidiary

Lake Zurich, IL - Aircraft Propeller Service, LLC (APS, www.aircraftpropeller.com, Lake Zurich, IL), one of the world’s leading commercial propeller Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) organizations, has been awarded a three-year contract to service servo actuators on the Helibras turbine helicopters by Helibras (Helicopters of Brazil, Inc., Sao Jose dos Campos, Sao Paulo, Brazil), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Airbus Helicopters, a division of Airbus. Located in Itajubá, Helibras is the only helicopter manufacturer based in Brazil and manages the production, sales and aftermarket for Airbus Helicopters with a share of almost 50% of the Brazilian fleet of turbine helicopters. The company has sold over 750 helicopters to the Brazilian domestic market since its inception in 1978 at the rate of approximately 36 aircraft per year for the civil, government and military sectors.
