Helicopter Rotor Blades Ready for Market After Years-Long Effort Pays Off

SANFORD, FLORIDA – On Sept. 29, Advanced Composite Structures Florida (ACSF) received a long-fought-for Federal Aviation Administration exemption allowing the company to represent foreign military surplus composite main rotor blades as “suitable for installation” on restricted category UH-1 helicopters. The exemption allows ACSF to sell the rotor blades to restricted category operators and requires the company to issue an FAA form 8130-3 for each; it is the first time the agency has granted an exemption on foreign military surplus articles.

IAI/ELTA to provide Helicopter SATCOM Network Systems to Key Customer

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has been awarded a significant contract by a key customer for delivering an advanced SATCOM (Satellite Communications) network system. The contract includes several dozens of airborne terminals and ground segments for medium and heavy lift helicopters. This is a follow on contract from the customer, which previously bought SATCOM terminals which were successfully installed and operated onboard attack helicopters. The ELK-1891 SATCOM network will be supplied by 2019, and is the latest technology developed by ELTA Systems Ltd., a group and subsidiary of IAI (IAI/ELTA).

NTSB Report Released: Midland, MI

On October 1, 2017, at 1447 eastern daylight time, a Brantly B-2B helicopter, N2284U, was substantially damaged during landing in an open field near Midland, Michigan. The pilot sustained fatal injuries and the passenger sustained minor injuries. The helicopter was registered to Attitude Toys, Inc. and operated by the pilot as a 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. Day visual meteorological conditions prevailed. The flight was not operated on a flight plan. The local flight originated from the same open field shortly before the accident.

NTSB Report Released: Lawrenceville, GA

On September 1, 2017, at 1058 eastern daylight time, a MD Helicopters 369FF, N5189K, was substantially damaged while on approach tofollowing an inflight loss of helicopter control at Gwinnett County Airport (LZU), Lawrenceville, Georgia. The commercial pilot and a pilot-rated crewmember were seriously injured. The helicopter was operated by the Gwinnett County Police Department as a local public flight. Day, visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time, and no flight plan was filed. The flight originated at LZU about 1000.
