H215 in action during China demo tour

The H215 wraps up its two-week demo tour in China. The heavy twin is the latest member of the Super Puma helicopter family and known for its multi-mission and long-range capabilities. The demo tour included flights in Zhuhai, Shenzhen and Lijiang, covering more than 2,000 km across China and demonstrated its capabilities for firefighting, power line missions, law enforcement, and passenger transportation as well as its excellent performance in high and hot conditions.

Garmin Pilot adds synthetic vision to Android mobile devices

New for Android, Garmin Pilot customers can now access synthetic vision (SVX), as well as pilot-configurable checklists within the app. Customers using Garmin Pilot on an Apple mobile device can take advantage of weight and balance calculations tailored to helicopter operators, Search and Rescue (SAR) options and more. Jerry Trimble Helicopters seventh annual touchdown auto contest a success!

McMinnville, OR: Jerry Trimble Helicopters (JTH) held their seventh annual touchdown autorotation competition at the McMinnville airport on June 25, 2017. Thirteen helicopter pilots competed in the event with Ramsay Nicholson CFI Hillsboro Aero, taking first place. Bruce Latvala, test flight pilot at Cessna took a close second with Tizian Gruber CFI Hillsboro Aero taking third. And finally, Trent Vick, CFI Hillsboro Aero taking fourth. Scoring was based on technique, accuracy and slide distance. Trimble flew with all pilots.

KAMAN SIGNS MULTI-YEAR IX H-60 COCKPIT CONTRACT WITH SIKORSKY

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- Kaman Corporation (NYSE:KAMN) announced today that its subsidiary Kaman Aerospace Corporation (Kaman) has entered into a new multi-year (MY) contract with Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) company, which outlines the pricing and conditions for the manufacture of H-60 cockpits under the Department of Defense MY IX H-60 procurement authorization. The term of the MY agreement between Kaman and Sikorsky will be for five years, starting in 2018 and ending in 2022, per Sikorsky and the U.S. Army’s recent signing of the MY IX contract. Under the agreement, Kaman will continue to manufacture UH-60M Black Hawk and HH-60M MEDEVAC model cockpits for Sikorsky at Kaman’s Jacksonville, Florida, facility. Since 2004 Kaman has delivered more than 1,200 new H-60 cockpits to Sikorsky.

NTSB Report Released: Ronan, MT

On July 6, 2017, about 1645 mountain daylight time, a Robinson R-44, N442DR, was substantially damaged during an emergency landing in Ronan, Montana. The private pilot was seriously injured and the passenger received minor injuries. The helicopter was owned and operated by a private individual and operated by the pilot under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed for the local flight. The personal flight departed Ronan Airport (7S0), Ronan, Montana about 1600.

UND Aerospace welcomes new Chief Instructor- Helicopter

The University of North Dakota and UND Aerospace would like to announce the appointment of Mr. Wes Van Dell as the Chief Helicopter Flight Instructor. Wes graduated from UND in 2006 with a B.S. degree in commercial aviation. As an instructor at UND, his responsibilities grew from flight instructing, to lecturing, to acting as a standardization and evaluation pilot. Since 2009, he have also been the safety officer for the helicopter department, serving on the UND Aerospace safety council and the SMS implementation team. He has over 3000 hours dual given in various airframes from the S300, to R44, to Bell 206. He brings experience from Southern California as well as extensive training time in the Northern Plains.

NTSB Report Released: Bella Vista, CA

On July 2, 2017, about 1715 Pacific daylight time, a Robinson Helicopter Company R44, N488AS, crashed into a pond near Bella Vista, California. The commercial pilot and one passenger sustained minor injuries; two passengers sustained serious injuries. The helicopter sustained substantial damage. The pilot was operating the helicopter under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 91. The local personal flight departed Redding, California, about 1700. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan had been filed.

EASA Approves Shadin Avionics STC for Robinson R66 Fuel Flow Management

Shadin Avionics recently announced that the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has approved the Shadin Avionics Supplemental Type Certificates (STC) for the Robinson R66 Fuel Flow Management System. The certification covers the installation of a RemoteFlo Fuel Flow System on the Robinson R66 helicopter and Rolls-Royce RR300 engine. The RemoteFlo offers R66 pilots access to real-time fuel flow management information directly on their GPS or Flight Management System. In addition to Fuel Flow, information available to the pilot includes Specific Range (including graphical range rings), Fuel to Destination, Fuel Reserve, Endurance, Fuel Flow, Fuel Used and Fuel Remaining.

NTSB Report Released: Boulder City, NV

On June 27, 2017, about 1403 Pacific daylight time, a Eurocopter EC 130 B4, N151GC, sustained substantial damage following a loss of engine power and subsequent forced landing, during which the helicopter contacted power lines, near Boulder City, Nevada. The pilot and four passengers were not injured, and two passengers sustained minor injuries. The helicopter was registered to American Helicopters LLC, and operated by Papillion Grand Canyon Helicopters as an air tour flight under the provision of 14 Code of Federal Regulations, Part 135. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the flight, and a company flight plan had been filed. The flight originated from Boulder City Municipal Airport, Boulder City, Nevada at 1348 with a planned destination of Grand Canyon West Airport, Peach Springs, Arizona.
