H145M successfully launched 70mm Laser Guided Rockets during its firing campaign in Sweden

In the first weeks of December 2017, Airbus Helicopters demonstrated the ability to fire laser guided rockets (FZ275 LGR from Thales) with its new H145M platform at the Älvdalen test range of the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration Flight test Centre. In a rough and challenging environment the system performed flawlessly.

Curtiss-Wright Fortress™ EUROCAE ED-112A Flight Data Recorders Released with Safety of Flight Approval

ASHBURN, Va. – January 30, 2018 – Curtiss-Wright’s Defense Solutions division has announced that its Fortress™ family of flight data recorders has been qualified for Safety of Flight release. Fortress meets the requirements set forth by the EUROCAE ED-112A “Minimum Operational Performance Specification for Crash Protected Airborne Recorder Systems” standard. Safety of Flight environmental qualification tests validate the ruggedness, operating temperature range and mitigation of problematic EMC emissions during operation. The successful completion of these critical tests results in a preliminary Declaration of Design and Performance (DDP) document identifying the results which is recognized and signed by an EASA representative thus enabling the Fortress to be used for flight test applications.

Frasca International, Urbana, IL has received an order for two Flight Training Devices (FTDs) from Sichuan Fan-Mei Aviation Industry Co., Ltd.; one Piper Seminole and one Robison R44. Both FTDs are built to CAAC Level 5 Standards. Sichuan Fan-Mei Aviation Industry Co., Ltd. is located in Beichuan County, Sichuan Province, China. Lantech Engineering, Ltd, Frasca’s exclusive Agent and Distributer for China, is located in Beijing and will administer the contract. The FTDs will be delivered in April of 2018.

NTSB Report Released: Perrysburg, OH

On January 15, 2018, about 1140 eastern standard time, a MD Helicopters Inc. 369HM helicopter, N4QX, was substantially damaged when it impacted terrain near Perrysburg, Ohio. The commercial pilot and crew member were fatally injured. The helicopter was owned and operated by Vista One Inc. The aerial observation flight was conducted under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed and no Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) flight plan had been filed for the flight. The local flight departed Wood County Airport (1G0), Bowling Green, Ohio, at an undetermined time.

Helicopter aviation safety initiatives demonstrate progress in Mexico and India

In 2017, Airbus' helicopter division safety expert, Erick Perez, led a number of safety initiatives in Latin America, all in an effort to improve helicopter flight safety in the region. Meeting with employees from the manufacturer’s customer centres, and at operators’ and authorities’ offices in Chile, Mexico, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Ecuador and Costa Rica, Perez spoke about the critical need for safety in aviation. “In 2017, we raised awareness on helicopter flight safety for nearly 2,000 people,” explains Perez. “That’s roughly the same number of people we saw over the last five years.”

Garmin® announces new 2018 classroom pilot training classes

Garmin is pleased to announce expanded pilot training opportunities for 2018 to include additional classes throughout the United States. Instructor-led training classes are available for the GTN 650/750 touchscreen navigator series, the G500/G600 glass flight display systems, and all Garmin Integrated Flight Decks. Supplemental eLearning opportunities are also available, and additional training for the G500 TXi/G600 TXi and G3X Touch series will be added later in the year. These new training opportunities and locations provide pilots with varying levels of experience a hands-on approach to learning Garmin avionics in a classroom environment taught by experienced certified flight instructors. Unless otherwise noted, all classes are hosted at Garmin Headquarters in Olathe, Kan., and include a factory tour, lunch and a Kansas City BBQ dinner.

NTSB Report Released: Albany, TX

On January 8, 2018, at 1345 central standard time, a Robinson R44 helicopter, N797JR, collided with trees and the terrain during an autorotation following a loss of tailrotor effectiveness while in a hover in Albany, Texas. The commercial pilot was not injured. The helicopter was substantially damaged. The helicopter was registered to S2 Helicopter Services and was operated by an individual as a 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. Day visual meteorological conditions prevailed. The flight was not operated on a flight plan. The local flight originated from a ranch in Albany, Texas, at 1310.
