NTSB Report Released: Galveston, TX

On February 6, 2017, about 1906 central standard time, a Bell 206B-III, N978RH, impacted the waters of West Bay 8 miles west of Galveston, Texas. One passenger was fatally injured. The pilot and a second passenger were seriously injured. The helicopter was destroyed. The helicopter was registered to and operated by Republic Helicopters, Santa Fe, Texas, under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 135 as a non-scheduled domestic passenger flight. Instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) prevailed at the time of the accident. Company flight following was being utilized. The flight originated from the oil tanker Eagle Vancouver, anchored in Galveston Bay, at 1837, and was en route to Republic Helicopters heliport (2TE1), in Santa Fe.

LEONARDO AESA RADAR TO GO ON NORTH AFRICAN USER'S UNMANNED ROTORCRAFT

Leonardo has announced, at the Avalon airshow in Geelong, Australia, that the company has been selected by Austrian-based Schiebel to deliver its active electronically-scanned array (AESA) radar technology for the Camcopter® S-100 unmanned air system (UAS) being provided to the armed forces of a North African nation. The radar, Leonardo’s PicoSAR, will be used to support border-monitoring and anti-terrorism surveillance missions. PicoSAR will be delivered in 2017 and go into service the same year.

Helicentre Aviation Expands EASA Flight Instructor Academy

Helicentre Aviation Academy has expanded the capability of its flight instructor career programme with the addition of a new Flight Instructor Course (FIC) instructor to meet demand for its professional pilot training courses. Captain Simon Wiles is only the second UK helicopter pilot to successfully undergo the CAA assessment since the implementation of EASA, earning him the privilege to deliver FI(H) courses. Captain Wiles was trained by, and now works alongside the company’s Head of Training who was the first in the UK to gain the qualification under EASA in 2015.

NTSB Report Released: Beattyville, KY

On February 7, 2017, about 0520 eastern standard time, a Eurocopter Deutschland GMBH EC 135 P2+, N135LG, was substantially damaged following a hard landing and dynamic roll over near Beattyville, Kentucky. The pilot and two passengers were not injured. The helicopter departed from the Mt. Sterling-Montgomery County Airport (IOB), Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, and was destined for an emergency medical service heliport located near St. Helens, Kentucky. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed for the emergency air medical flight conducted under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 135.
