V-280 VALOR SCORES TOP MARKS DURING LOW-SPEED AGILITY TESTING

21 May 2019 - The Bell V-280 Valor recently completed flight demonstrations of its low-speed agility key performance parameter (KPP) in the U.S. Army-led Joint Multi-Role Technology Demonstrator (JMR TD) program ahead of schedule. The V-280 Valor has now demonstrated in flight testing that it has the raw control power in pitch, roll, and yaw maneuvers to meet the Army’s Level 1 Handling Qualities requirements, which is the highest performance standard for agility. This flight testing validates Bell’s engineering models and development processes to design, build, and test an air vehicle on an aggressive aircraft development schedule that meets Army performance requirements and delivers revolutionary capabilities to warfighters.

NTSB Preliminary Report: Oakridge, OR

On April 26, 2019, about 0700 Pacific daylight time, a Bell 206B, N206JH, struck trees during a forced landing in Oakridge, Oregon. The commercial pilot was not injured, and the helicopter sustained substantial damage. The helicopter was registered to and operated by Wilbur Ellis Company under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 as an agricultural aerial application flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan had been filed. The local flight departed from a remote landing spot in Oakridge at 0642.

Heli-One Awarded H215 and AS332L1 Upgrade Contract by German Federal Ministry of Interior

May 21, 2019, Stavanger, Norway, Heli-One, a leading provider of helicopter maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO), is pleased to announce a helicopter upgrade contract with the German Federal Ministry of Interior to modify their incoming Airbus H215 fleet and existing AS332 aircraft. NTSB Preliminary Report: St Jacob, IL

On April 20, 2019, at 1930 central daylight time, a Robinson Helicopter Company R66, N766WC, impacted an unmarked powerline and terrain during an aerial application of a field near St Jacob, Illinois. The helicopter sustained substantial damage. The airline transport pilot received serious injuries. The helicopter was registered to and operated by Skyline Helicopters LLC under Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 as an aerial application flight that was not operating on a flight plan. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The local flight originated from St Jacob, Illinois at 1915.

NTSB Factual Report: Sula, MT

The helicopter pilot reported that, after an aerial application flight, he set the bucket down in a pre-determined operations zone near a semi-truck loading hopper to be refilled. He added that another truck arrived to top off the semi-truck hopper, which emitted fertilizer dust that caused the pilot concerns for his deteriorating visibility. He advised the ground crew that he was going to move out of the operations zone temporarily.

NTSB Preliminary Report: Kailua, HI

On April 29, 2019, about 0910 Hawaii-Aleutian standard time (HST), a Robinson R-44 Helicopter, N808NV, impacted terrain in a residential neighborhood while maneuvering near Kailua, Hawaii. The commercial pilot and two passengers were fatally injured, and the helicopter was destroyed. The helicopter was registered to United Helicopter Leasing, LLC, and operated by Novictor Aviation, LLC, as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 135 air tour flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and a company VFR flight plan was opened. The flight originated from the Daniel K Inouye International Airport (HNL), Honolulu, Hawaii about 0854.

EASA approves FLARM for helicopters

EASA has formally approved FLARM for fixed installation in helicopters. Being already installed in over 40,000 General Aviation aircraft, helicopter operators previously had to apply for individual installation approvals from EASA or use PowerFLARM Portable. The newly published EASA Certification Memorandum (CM) extends generic FLARM installations from ELA2 aircraft (previously available as a Standard Change or an AML-based Minor Change) to all CS‑23, CS‑27 and CS‑29 aircraft, including all rotorcraft.
