NTSB Final Report: Blacksburg, VA

On August 14, 2018, at 1330 eastern daylight time, at the Mountain Lake Biological Station, Blacksburg, Virginia, a Dà-Jiang Innovations (DJI) Phantom 4 small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS, commonly known as a drone), registration FA3HCWCR4X, operated by the Virginia Tech Conservation Management Institute (CMI), collided with a bystander resulting in minor injuries. There was no damage to the drone. The flight was an educational demonstration flight conducted in Class G airspace under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 107. Visual flight rules conditions prevailed at the time of the incident.

NTSB Preliminary Report: Viroqa, WI

On August 19, 2019, about 1834 Central daylight time, an experimental light sport, Sport Copter Vortex gyrocopter, N634SC, impacted a corn field about .31 miles west of the departure end of runway 29 at Viroqua Municipal Airport (Y51) Viroqua, Wisconsin. The gyrocopter was owned and operated by the pilot as a visual flight rules (VFR) flight under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 when the accident occurred. The non-certificated pilot was fatally injured and the gyrocopter was destroyed by the impact and post-crash fire. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan had been filed. The flight departed Y51 about 1830.

Second five-bladed H145 prototype performs maiden flight

Donauwörth – Early August, the second prototype of the new five-bladed H145 took off for its maiden flight at the Airbus Helicopters site in Donauwörth. The helicopter will be used for additional flight tests to achieve EASA certification of the new five-bladed H145 in early 2020. The first prototype is currently performing a high altitude test campaign in South America. The second prototype will be mainly used for autopilot testing, performance and airframe structural validation.

Robinson Offers NEW R66 Slimline Auxiliary Fuel Tank at Special Introductory Price

Torrance, CA – (26 August 2019) The FAA certified Robinson Helicopter’s Slimline Auxiliary Fuel Tank for its R66 Turbine helicopter. The tank holds 23.2 gallons (88 liters), roughly half the fuel of the company’s larger auxiliary fuel tank, adds approximately 1 hour to helicopter endurance, and extends its range by as much as 100 nautical miles (115 statute miles). It mounts on a fiberglass tray that installs in the aircraft’s baggage compartment, occupies one-third of the space, and leaves room for up to 200 lbs. of baggage. Both tank and tray can be removed when not in use.

Programs such as Land & LIVE—or, as I like to say it, "Land the damn helicopter!"—have been embraced by the industry and regulatory agencies worldwide as a significant tool in preventing accidents. We are turning away from proscriptive safety ("Thou shalt not ...") to focusing on tools that equip us to manage the risks inherent in aviation.
