Curtiss-Wright Congratulates Sierra Nevada Corporation on Being Selected by U.S. DoD to Provide Degraded Visual Environment System for HH-60G Rotorcraft

PARIS AIR SHOW 2019, PARIS, France (Kallman U.S. Chalet #8) – Curtiss-Wright’s Defense Solutions division today congratulated Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) on its recent selection by the U.S. DoD to provide the Degraded Visual Environment System (DVES) for use on the Air Force’s HH-60G Pave Hawk combat search and rescue helicopters. SNC’s DVES, which uses safety certifiable rugged commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) embedded technology, improves situational awareness to pilots and aircrew operating in DVE conditions by adding new functional capabilities to the HH-60G. Use of the DVES will increase the safety of military aircrews by enabling pilots to safely operate in aircraft-induced degraded visual environments such as brownout and whiteout conditions through the use of a multi-sensor system that provides real-time, high-resolution fused data and imagery of the terrain and obstacles. This game-changing technology will increase aircrew situational awareness of obstacles throughout all phases of flight including, power lines, ditches, mountains, rocks and other obstacles, reducing loss of life and equipment.

NTSB Final Report: Yabucoa, PR

According to the helicopter pilot, he dropped off a lineman on top of a power line tower to install fiber lines. The lineman completed the task and informed the pilot by radio that he was ready to be picked up from the tower. While picking up the lineman, the pilot hovered next to the tower and signaled to the lineman that he was ready for him to transfer from the tower to the helicopter’s left skid. When the lineman reached out to attach his lanyard to the helicopter, the pilot felt the main rotor blades strike a fiber line that the lineman had just installed. The helicopter became controllable, and the pilot conducted a precautionary landing without picking up the lineman. After the pilot discussed the event with the lineman, the lineman raised the fiber line to a higher position on the tower and then the pilot picked him up.

NTSB Preliminary Report: Deer Trail, CO

On June 8, 2019, about 1130 mountain daylight time, a Robinson R44 helicopter, N4504L, impacted terrain during a low altitude aerial application operation near Deer Trail, Colorado. The commercial pilot sustained minor injuries and the helicopter sustained substantial damage. The helicopter was registered to CO Fire Aviation and operated by Scott Aviation as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident and no flight plan had been filed. The local flight departed about 1120.

Airbus Helicopters and the French Ministry for Transport to perform first flight of hybrid light helicopter demonstrator in 2020

Le Bourget – Airbus Helicopters and the French Ministry for Transport (DGAC) have announced the launch of a research project aimed at demonstrating the use of a hybrid propulsion system on board a single-engine helicopter testbed. This initiative, which will lead to the first flight of a demonstrator in 2020, will focus on the integration of an electric backup system on the testbed helicopter in order to power the rotor system for up to 30 seconds, without the use of the main gas turbine.

Italian National Fire Corps expands AW139 helicopter fleet with €75 million order

Support and maintenance services strengthen in Europe with SPECTO Aerospace appointed helicopter Blade Repair Centre

Paris, 18 June 2019 – Leonardo announced at the Paris Air Show today the appointment of SPECTO Aerospace as a Blade Repair Centre for the AW109 light twin and the AW139 intermediate twin engine helicopter main and tail rotor blades in Europe, including Russia. The appointment follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Amsterdam in late 2018, allowing SPECTO Aerospace to join a network of four other Blade Repair Centres based in UAE, UK, USA and Singapore. Headquartered at Amsterdam Lelystad- Airport, The Netherlands, SPECTO Aerospace has more than 15 years of experience in maintenance of composite components. SPECTO’s facility at the Royal Netherlands Air Force base in Woensdrecht is specialized in the repair of helicopter rotor blades for the civil and military market.

Collins Aerospace joins Sikorsky in revolutionizing approach to autonomous flight with new fly-by-wire technology
