NTSB Report Released: Waimea, HI

On October 4, 2016, about 0910 Hawaiian standard time, a McDonnell Douglas Helicopter (MDHI) 369E N311VT, sustained substantial damage to the main rotor during initial climb from a remote location at Kohala Mountains near Waimea, Hawaii. The commercial pilot and 2 passengers were not injured. The helicopter was registered to, and operated by Volcano Helicopters Inc. under the provision of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 135. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the flight which operated on a company flight plan.

Continuing Development of the Enstrom TH180

Menominee, Mich. – October 2016 – Enstrom Helicopter Corporation continues its flight test program on the second TH180 helicopter Flight Test Vehicle. Several test plans have been submitted to the FAA, the FAA has been providing excellent support and various tests are being completed. The program is back on track after the delay caused by the accident with FTV 1. “Thus far, the TH-180 is meeting and xceeding our expectations” said Bill Taylor, Senior Test Pilot, and Co-Program Manager. The first static test was successfully completed on September 20th. “We have just crossed another milestone with recent test completions. We are on our way!”

Airbus helicopters achieve 98 percent availability during 2016 Rio Olympic Games

The results of a survey conducted by Helibras with the operators of around 90 Airbus helicopters deployed during the 2016 Rio Olympics and Paralympics showed that the fleet achieved 98% availability from the start of preparation for the Games in July, to the closure of the competitions on 18 September 2016. The aircraft were used for security, defence, and as camera platforms.

Robinson Delivers Two R44 Cadets to Texas

Torrance, CA — on October 17th, Robinson Helicopter Company delivered two R44 Cadet helicopters (S/Ns 30006 and 30007) to SKY Helicopters, an FAA part 141 flight school, and Robinson’s dealer in Garland, Texas. According to SKY’s President Ken Pyatt, the affordability of the Cadet along with the optional glass technology, HeliSAS Autopilot and air conditioning make it a very appealing trainer. The Cadet’s longer 2400 TBO brings its hourly operating cost closer to the R22, a plus for flight schools and pilots trying to build hours.

NTSB Report Released: Caldwell, ID

On October 19, 2016, about 0910 mountain daylight time, an experimental amateur-built Gray Jim Robert Exec 90 helicopter, N716JB, was substantially damaged following a forced landing after experiencing a loss of engine power at the Caldwell Industrial Airport (EUL), Caldwell, Idaho. The private pilot and registered owner of the helicopter were not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The flight was being conducted in accordance with 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91, and a flight plan was not filed. The proposed local flight was originating at the time of the accident.

FAA Issues Part 107 Waivers, Airspace Authorizations

October 25- The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) began issuing Part 107 waivers and airspace authorizations to drone operators starting August 29, 2016, the effective date of the new rule. As of October 24, 2016, the agency has approved 81 authorizations for flights in Class D and E airspace, and has issued 36 waivers of Part 107 provisions to drone operators who applied after the rule’s effective date.
