Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) Orders AW139 Helicopters to enhance County’s fire suppression and EMS/SAR capability and responsiveness

Philadelphia, 2 December 2019 - Leonardo announced that Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) signed a contract for four AW139 intermediate twin engine helicopters. The aircraft will be used to perform a range of missions—primarily fire suppression, emergency medical services (EMS) and search and rescue (SAR)—and will have special equipment including a cargo hook, rescue hoist and Bambi bucket. The first helicopter is expected to be delivered from Leonardo’s Philadelphia facility in Q3 2020. A comprehensive 5-year support, maintenance and training package will be provided with the possibility of a further extension to a total of 15 years.

Airbus Helicopters signs Global Support Contract for Tiger helicopters

Marignane – Airbus Helicopters and OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d'Armement / Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation) have signed a tri-lateral Global Support Contract aimed at boosting the availability rate of the Tigers in service in the French, German, and Spanish Armies. With this long-term support agreement, Tiger readiness and supportability will be secured for the next decade and beyond. The contract covers critical items such as continuous improvement and obsolescence treatment as well as securing repair and spares capabilities with all vendors involved. In addition, it provides for the individual needs of each customer in line with their operational and deployment scenarios. For instance, in France, the agreement guarantees parts availability up to 98% and provides for the simplification of logistics as Airbus Helicopters will also directly take over the provisioning of new parts, as well as repaired parts and other expendables.

Boeing to Give $48 Million in Grants to More Than 400 Global Charitable Organizations

NTSB Preliminary Report: Salt Lake City, UT

On November 12, 2019, about 2008 mountain standard time, an AgustaWestland A109SP helicopter, N271HC, was substantially damaged during cruise flight near Spanish Fork, Utah. The airline transport pilot and flight nurse were not injured. The airplane was registered to and operated by IHC Health Services, Inc. as an unscheduled air medical flight, conducted under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 135. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and a company flight plan was filed for the local flight, which was destined for an off-airport location in Spanish Fork, Utah.

NTSB Final Report: Springfield, TN

The helicopter pilot reported that, after landing and while hover taxiing and turning right toward the taxiway, the helicopter continued turning right and drifted past the taxiway. He applied full left pedal and then closed the throttle to perform an autorotation to decrease the speed of rotation to no avail. He added collective to reduce the descent rate, but the helicopter landed and slid into a drainage ditch, the main rotor blades impacted a berm near the taxiway, and the helicopter came to rest on its side.

Students Shine at Third Annual Bell Vertical Robotics Competition

Committed to furthering STEM education in schools, Bell launched its third annual Bell Vertical Robotics Competition this past weekend. The 2019 competition theme was On-Demand Mobility which simulated air-taxi movement of people and rapid-delivery of product orders. 17 high school teams from all over the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX area and Virginia were provided a drone kit to assemble and modify to accomplish several unique missions for the competition. The teams were given eight weeks to design, build and integrate their robotic solutions to achieve the On-Demand Mobility challenge with the guidance from Bell Engineering mentors.

EASA certifies Safran Aneto-1K in Leonardo AW189K

NTSB Preliminary Report: Penobscot, ME

On November 16, 2019, about 1845 eastern standard time, a Leonardo A109E helicopter, N901EM, experienced a severe inflight vibration and subsequently performed an emergency landing near Penobscot, Maine. The helicopter was registered to LifeFlight of Maine LLC and operated by SevenBar Aviation. The flight was conducted under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 135 as a helicopter air ambulance that departed Blue Hill Memorial Hospital and was en route to Eastern Maine Medical center after loading a patient. About 5 minutes into the flight, the pilot reported feeling a "small vibration" on the flight controls, fuselage, and his seat. The vibration was characterized as a lateral shake. The pilot reduced collective, slowed the helicopter airspeed, and discussed the vibration with the medical team. The vibration subsequently increased in severity, prompting the pilot to immediately execute a precautionary landing. The helicopter landed successfully with no reported injuries to the four occupants on board.

On October 7, 2018, at 1340 eastern daylight time, an Enstrom F-28C helicopter, N5691Y, was substantially damaged when it impacted terrain shortly after takeoff from a field in Bridgeville, Delaware. The commercial pilot and three passengers were not injured. The helicopter was operated by J&J Shop HeliAir LLC., as a local sightseeing flight conducted under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed for the local flight.
