ASU Welcomes Army Veterans to Pilot Training Staff

(BOISE, Idaho—November 12, 2018) Aviation Specialties Unlimited, Inc. (ASU), announced this week that Josh Grier and Tony Tsantles joined ASU’s training team. Grier was named the new Director of Training and Tsantles in the newest NVG Instructor. ASU has added nine new employees this year, six of whom have served in the military. Both Tsantles and Grier have extensive military experience and training.

Airbus Helicopters Delivers Upgraded Night Vision to NPAS’ UK Police Helicopters

Oxford, Airbus Helicopters has delivered the first of seven upgraded National Police Air Service (NPAS) H135 helicopters, under a £1.5 million contract signed in December 2017 to equip and standardise the UK police helicopter fleet’s Night Vision (NVIS) capability. Under the new configuration, all seven NPAS’ H135 helicopters will be capable of NVIS operations down to ground level, enhancing their night time surveillance capabilities at all heights and in all environments.

NTSB Preliminary Report Released: Beekmantown, NY

On October 30, 2018, at 1611 eastern daylight time, an Aerospatiale AS355, N372CA, was destroyed when it collided with a wooden utility pole and power lines near Beekmantown, New York. The airline transport pilot and a lineman were fatally injured. The pilot-rated passenger and another lineman sustained serious injuries. The helicopter was registered to and operated by Catalyst Aviation, LLC, Hammonton, New Jersey, and was being operated under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 133 as a rotorcraft external load flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed for the flight that departed from a designated landing zone near Plattsburgh, New York, at 1602.

LEONARDO AWARDED CONTRACT FOR 22 OF THE NEW AW169M HELICOPTER VARIANT BY ITALY'S GUARDIA DI FINANZA

The certified flight instructor (CFI) and airline transport pilot were seriously injured and the helicopter exhibited substantial damage throughout. The helicopter was registered to Treblig LLC and operated by the pilot as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 instructional flight. The helicopter departed from a grass landing zone with two linemen attached for short haul operations in connection with utility line work. The commercial pilot was fatally injured and the two lineman sustained minor injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the external load operation that was conducted under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 133, and no flight plan had been filed.

On October 22, 2018, about 1710 Hawaiian standard time, a Robinson R44 helicopter, N4132H, was substantially damaged during a hard landing on the Kaneohe Sandbar, a large area of sand covered by shallow water, located in Kaneohe Bay, near Kaneohe, Hawaii. The commercial pilot and two passengers sustained serious injuries. The helicopter was registered to Higgins Leasing Inc. and operated by Novictor Aviation under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as an air tour flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the local flight, and a company flight plan was filed. The helicopter originated from Honolulu International Airport, Honolulu, Hawaii at 1647, and was planned to complete a 45-minute circle island route flight.

He reported that, while en route, he detected an in-flight vibration and made a precautionary landing on an oil platform.
