Royal Air Force selects Leonardo for counter-drone research programme

At the DSEI 2019 exhibition, Leonardo has announced that it has been selected by the UK’s Royal Air Force (RAF) to support the next stage of their research and development programme. The study will explore the current threat posed by hostile drones and how this is likely to evolve in future, as well as evaluating a range of technologies that could form a future RAF counter-drone capability. The programme is expected to last three years and will commence in early 2020.

Leonardo puts forward its AW149 for the latest/future generation tactical troop helicopter requirements at DSEI 2019

London, 10 September 2019 - At the DSEI 2019 exhibition, Leonardo displays its latest- generation medium-lift AW149 helicopter. The modern, reliable and cost-effective aircraft is rapidly configurable to meet a wide range of military missions: Troop transport/troop insertion (carrying up to 16 fully-equipped troops or up to 19 passengers), cargo re-supply/external lift, CASEVAC/MEDEVAC, search and rescue (SAR), Special Forces operations and combat SAR, Command and Control (C2), and close air support. The AW149 has been certified by the Italian Directorate of Air Armaments (ARMAEREO). It has already been selected in the export market where it is in service today.

Leonardo’s new MAIR system shows off multi-sensor Infra-Red coverage capabilities on first test flight

Following its launch in June at the Paris Air Show, Leonardo has successfully conducted the first test flight of its Multiple Aperture Infra-Red (MAIR) system, which provides crews with spherical missile warning, Hostile Fire Indication (HFI), day and night imaging and Infra-Red Search and Track (IRST) functionality. The MAIR system has been installed on a testbed helicopter and departed from La Spezia on the coast of Italy on a round-trip flight path which took it past nearby Genova. During the test, the MAIR operated as expected and was able to record data throughout the flight. Further flights will now take place to verify the MAIR’s full suite of modes.

Single engine TH-119 helicopter obtains FAA IFR certification, best solution for U.S. Navy training

Leonardo’s Falco EVO drone is used to monitor irregular migration during Frontex operation

On the 20th June, Leonardo’s Falco EVO tactical remotely-piloted aerial system played a key role in monitoring a case involving irregular migrants in the Mediterranean sea as part of monitoring activities of Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. In an operation launched from the Italian island of Lampedusa, the Falco EVO worked with other Frontex assets to identify a “mothership” trawler as 81 illegal migrants were transferred to smaller boats, a technique increasingly used by criminal organisations. Following the transfer, the Falco EVO’s surveillance payloads kept a close eye on the trawler until an enforcement operation was launched by Italian authorities to seize the boat.

Italian National Fire Corps expands AW139 helicopter fleet with €75 million order

Leonardo announced new signed contracts for five additional AW139s to the Italian National Fire Corps (Vigili del Fuoco, part of Ministry of the Interior), including integrated logistic support and training for crews and technicians. Support and maintenance services strengthen in Europe with SPECTO Aerospace appointed helicopter Blade Repair Centre

Paris, 18 June 2019 – Leonardo announced at the Paris Air Show today the appointment of SPECTO Aerospace as a Blade Repair Centre for the AW109 light twin and the AW139 intermediate twin engine helicopter main and tail rotor blades in Europe, including Russia. The appointment follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Amsterdam in late 2018, allowing SPECTO Aerospace to join a network of four other Blade Repair Centres based in UAE, UK, USA and Singapore. Headquartered at Amsterdam Lelystad- Airport, The Netherlands, SPECTO Aerospace has more than 15 years of experience in maintenance of composite components. SPECTO’s facility at the Royal Netherlands Air Force base in Woensdrecht is specialized in the repair of helicopter rotor blades for the civil and military market.

Leonardo unveils its largest-ever drone, the Falco Xplorer, opening up new civil and military markets for the Company in the unmanned domain

Today, at an unveiling event at the Paris Air Show, Leonardo introduced its largest-ever Remotely-Piloted Air System (RPAS), the Falco Xplorer. Building on the success of the Company’s Falco family of tactical-class RPAS, the new drone features a payload capacity of 350kg, more than 24 hours flight time and a satellite communications capability for beyond-radio-line-of-sight operations, all within a 1.3 ton maximum take-off weight (MTOW). Everything is designed in-house by Leonardo, from the aircraft itself to the sensor suite, mission system and ground control station and the Falco Xplorer will be offered as both an integrated platform and as a fully-managed information-superiority service. In the latter model, Leonardo will operate the aircraft and its sensors and manage logistics to provide actionable information directly to the customer.

Canadian Armed Forces’ new unmanned surveillance drones will be equipped with Leonardo E-scan radar

At the CanSec exhibition (Ottawa, 29-30 May) Leonardo has announced that it has signed a multi-million Euro contract with prime contractor QinetiQ to provide a number of PicoSAR Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA, also known as ‘E-Scan’) radars. The radars will equip the new unmanned Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) aircraft that have been ordered by the Canadian Armed Forces. Designed and manufactured by Leonardo in Edinburgh, UK, PicoSAR will be employed by Canadian military units at sea and on land, for both domestic and international operations.

Sloane signs contract for two additional AW109s and renews Distributorship Agreement in UK

The agreement covers the AW109 GrandNew, AW109 Trekker and AW169 types over the period 2019-2021. Under the Distributorship Agreement, Sloane foresees the purchase of at least eight new helicopters by 2021, with a contract for an AW109 GrandNew and an AW109 Trekker in VIP configuration signed at EBACE.

Leonardo looks at opportunities in Mexico and Latin America

Leonardo attends FAMEX, Mexico’s largest military, civil, and security aerospace expo in Mexico City, touting best-in-class offerings across its helicopter, aircraft and radar product lines and a new corporate office to open this summer in Mexico City. Latin America is becoming a strategic area for Leonardo due to requirements for systems to guarantee security and protection of national communities and capabilities to respond to environmental emergencies. Leonardo is already present in such markets with the C-27 – recently used by Peru to support the population affected by El Nino – and a large fleet of helicopters in many countries, including Mexico with over 80 units for law enforcement and public utility operations. Many airports are using Leonardo Air Traffic Control systems and the Company’s naval systems are on board a number of ships in many countries.
