I can't decide whether to be discouraged or empowered by what I read on the JH Forums. I started flying helicopters because I love flying, and I didn't want to spend the rest of my life tied to a desk. Then I read the forums, and there are so many unhappy people in this industry. Not just unhappy, but down right hateful of this industry from what I can tell.
There is discontent for Offshore jobs, EMS jobs, and a particular amount of hatred is thrown towards the newer "Robbie" pilots and anyone who helps or defends them. I happen to be one of those new guys, and since the problem people appear to have is the current path of flight instruction to 1000-1500 hours isn't preparing us adequately for the commercial jobs, I want to see some constructive criticism. All I see are complaints, but nobody is offering solutions.
I am doing what I can to better prepare myself and my students by contacting various leaders in the industry to help develop a scenario based training syllabus for our commercial students. I have gotten a lot of good feedback and have incorporated a lot of interesting ideas into our syllabus. At this stage of my career, I am not sure that there is much more that I can do. For those of you that have been there and done that, and are unhappy with the quality of pilots coming up, I have to ask, what are you doing about it? If your answer is to simply complain, then I would have to say it isn't the newer pilots who are the problem. If you do want to help, lets get some ideas on the table and see if we can make some improvements.

been commercially. Where you go will be determand by your aditude. Stay positive and love what you do and you will go far. Dont be put out by what you read on here. Most of this is just crap, people bitching because a younger pilot got "thier" job or a machanic pissed of at pilots breaking things or pilots pissed at machanics for breaking things ;) Either way my advice to you remains the same. Stay possitive and NEVER post anything nagitive on here. The reason I say that is it brings others down (as you well know) and the industry is small enough that people will know who you are. Fly safe and keep doing what you love.

teach your students to think, learn about the aircraft rather than having them become Taxi Drivers, There is a generational gap as well as a loss of perspective of where the industry came from and where it is possibly going. this too affects how others view the new comers.

I can't Agree more. I grew up dreaming to fly, looking up to men that were pilots, believing that they were just as excited and happy to be doing what they dreamed of doing as I was. My dads best friend was a helicopter pilot and he had this awesome aura about him that was very inspiring. Evo is right on. Dodge the crap posts and stick to the alternate forum, which contains a ton of useful information. Listen to the advice given my the men with experience and learn from their mistakes. A lot of the older guys are very willing to give their advice and I love hearing their stories and how they arrived where they are today. Develop good judgement and good habits and stick your hand out and shake people hands and remember their names.

I've encountered complainers in every aviation job since 1985. Stay positive seek out the positive people and march on!
