Im looking to join the National Guard to be a mechanic for the Apache. I am wondering if this will get you A&P certified? Or will it take off some classes you have to get to be certified? I know nothing about this subject so any information will help.

You will not recieve an A&P qualification for completing US Army Helicopter Mechanic Schools. That said, almost all Civilian A&P schools will award credit for military mechanic service and the FSDO's accept the credits.

Depending on the number of years served and the course complexity, I have had soldiers recieve upwards of 75% credit toward the A&P training requirements in a 3 year hitch. The problem is a mechanic is given little credit towards the Powerplant rating.

Talk to your recruiter about this as things change to fast to keep up with.

It depends on the FSDO office and your experience.  My friend and I were both Blackhawk mechanics in the Army.  He got both of his tickets in San Antonio and in Houston they only gave me my Airframe ticket.  Both of us had 6 years Army aviation experience.

I was a OH-58 mechanic, then went the CWO route (Peter Pilot), now ret. 9 years. In the GA world all this time. If you look in the back of the latest FAR AMT (Fed. Reg. for Aviation Maintenance Technicians) or look up AC65-30A appx A. on the FAA website, it shows what MOS's qualify. From the time I was flying AH-1/OH-58D and had gotten my A&P I helped 35 of my Crew Chiefs get thier A&P's. They then took that to the local Community College and with 5 more classes earned an AS degree. FAR part 65.71 is where you need to look also. Work as 15R? (67R in the olden days) you have to work for at least 30 months, in the MOS. As a guard guy the FSDO may question the time req. you have, but if you know and work with. He/She can write you a letter, that they have worked with you and that you meet the req. of part 65.77. Knowlege of the FAA-FAR's is power!

That letter is the key, i agree with the above quote. I had 9.5 years of Active duty Apache Mech time, and even though my MOS qualified for both A&P, the local FSDO would not sign me off for my P. Luckily he told me before I walked in, so, I waited until I moved and got my tickets then. Even with an A&P, you dont know everything and still need to continue to learn.

I agree that most FSDOs will accept a DD-214 to get the tickets, but, Baltimore and Jersey will not. They wont sign you off for the powerplant portion. Richmond Va is very military friendly though.
