One step closer: NASA and Collins Aerospace advance technology for safe operation of unmanned aircraft in the National Airspace System

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Collins Aerospace Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), is entering the final stages of a nine-year project with NASA to enable unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) to operate safely in the National Airspace System (NAS). The project, co-funded by Collins Aerospace and which is expected to be completed in Sept. 2020, has facilitated the development of a Command Non-Payload Control (CNPC) data link waveform that informed the initial certification standards for UAS Command and Control in the NAS.

Royal Thai Air Force joins H135 military training operators

Singapore, 12 February 2020 – Airbus Helicopters has signed an order for six H135 military training helicopters from the Royal Thai Air Force, as part of its pilot training enhancement programme. The very first military training helicopters ever ordered by the Royal Thai Air Force, these new twin-engine H135s will be utilised for an array of training missions, including ab-initio flight training. They will complement the Royal Thai Air Force’s existing H225M fleet, bringing its Airbus fleet to 18 units.

Elbit Systems Selected to Provide Airborne EW Systems to the German Air Force

Museum Adds Historic Army Helicopter to Collection

A recently retired, veteran U.S. Army Boeing CH-47D Chinook helicopter will make a new home at the Museum on Feb. 8. Nicknamed My Old Lady, it was the oldest flyable Chinook in the world-wide Army inventory when it was taken off of flight status in 2017 after 54 years of service.The military workhorse will be trucked from Camp Murray—adjacent Joint Base Lewis-McChord, where it has been stationed with the Washington state Army National Guard since 2009. The big chopper will be delivered by some of the same crew members that have been serving with the aircraft for years, and they will remain with the helicopter all weekend preparing it for exhibition in the Museum’s Aviation Pavilion. The public are invited to watch its arrival and reassembly.

NTSB Preliminary Report: Minot, ND

On January 22, 2020, about 1332 central standard time, a Bell 407 helicopter, N947LH, impacted a helipad perimeter fence during a landing near Minot, North Dakota. The pilot, the sole occupant, was not injured and the helicopter sustained substantial damage. The helicopter was registered to and operated by Executive Air Taxi Corp under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a positioning flight. Day visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the flight.

Four H160s for the French Navy’s search and rescue missions

Marignane, 10 February 2020 – The French Armament General Directorate (DGA) is to supply four H160s to the French Navy for search and rescue missions through a partnership between Airbus Helicopters, Babcock, and Safran Helicopter Engines. The French Navy will start operating these helicopters in 2022 for a period of ten years. This interim fleet of H160s will enable the French Navy to ensure the continuity of these critical missions as the Alouette III retires from service and pending Guépard deliveries. Airbus Helicopters, and its partners, will also be responsible for supporting the fleet with a high level of availability and performance commitments. In addition, French Navy operational feedback will be monitored to benefit the design of the military version of the H160 and its support system.

NTSB Preliminary Report: Mechanicsburg, PA

On January 9, 2020, about 2029 eastern standard time, a Robinson R66, N450MC, experienced an in-flight break-up near Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. The private pilot and one passenger were fatally injured and the helicopter was destroyed. The helicopter was operated under the provisions of title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. Night visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and no flight plan was filed for the flight. The flight originated about 1958 from Martin State Airport (MTN), Baltimore, Maryland, and was destined for Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF), Buffalo, New York.

Rolls-Royce has delivered its 250th engine to Enstrom Helicopter Corporation. The RR M250-C20W has reliably powered the Enstrom 480B for more than 25 years, first entering service together in 1993. Engine number 250 will power a helicopter for the Botswana Police-Air Support Branch as part of a deal announced this week by Enstrom.
