Leonardo to acquire Kopter with the aim of extending its helicopter market leadership

Anaheim, 28 January 2020 – Leonardo has signed a contract with Lynwood (Schweiz) AG to acquire 100% of Kopter Group AG (Kopter). This move allows Leonardo to further strengthen its worldwide leadership and position in the rotorcraft sector; leveraging innovation, new capabilities and engineering skills which have been developed by the young, agile Swiss Company. Kopter’s SH09, a new single engine helicopter, is a perfect fit for Leonardo’s state of the art product range offering opportunities for future technological developments. The Swiss company’s competencies will boost future developments towards more disruptive technologies, mission capabilities and performances, including innovative hybrid/electrical propulsion solutions. This acquisition will replace the planned investment aimed at the development of a new single engine helicopter. Within the Helicopter Division of Leonardo, Kopter will act as an autonomous legal entity and competence centre working in coordination with us.

Rolls-Royce and Asia Pacific Aerospace select H&P General Aviation Services for maintenance work in China

Asia Pacific Aerospace (APA), a Rolls-Royce FIRST network Authorized Maintenance Repair & Overhaul Center (AMROC), has signed an agreement with H&P General Aviation Services Co., Ltd for helicopter engine support in China. The H&P General Aviation Services facility, based in the Chinese city of Guangzhou, will provide in-country service as an Authorized Service Center (ASC) for Rolls-Royce M250 and RR300 turboshaft engines.

Leonardo Helicopters Philadelphia delivers 300th AW139 helicopter

Philadelphia, - Leonardo delivered on January 24 the 300th AW139 assembled at its Northeast Philadelphia facility. The aircraft is a Boeing MH-139A Grey Wolf assigned to the United States Air Force. The site, which serves as Leonardo Helicopters’ North America headquarters, has been operational since 1980 and employs over 700. Leonardo Helicopters Philadelphia also manufactures the AW119 helicopter, a variant of which was selected by the U.S. Navy on January 13, and the world’s first commercial tiltrotor, the AW609.

EC145e closer to IFR approval from Transport Canada

27 January 2020 – Anaheim, Calif. – Metro Aviation today announced it’s moving closer to receiving Transport Canada certification for the Airbus EC145e’s IFR package. With support from Metro Aviation, Genesys AeroSystems and S-TEC established an FAA Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the aircraft in February 2019 and Canadian approval is expected this year. The certification comes ahead of an anticipated EC145e delivery for Airmedic, a Canadian based EMS company.

NTSB Final Report: New York, NY

On March 11, 2018, about 1908 eastern daylight time, an Airbus Helicopters AS350 B2, N350LH, lost engine power during cruise flight, and the pilot performed an autorotative descent and ditching on the East River in New York, New York. The pilot sustained minor injuries, the five passengers drowned, and the helicopter was substantially damaged. The FlyNYON-branded flight was operated by Liberty Helicopters Inc. (Liberty), per a contractual agreement with NYONair; both companies considered the flight to be an aerial photography flight operated under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 91. (During this accident investigation, the Federal Aviation Administration determined that Liberty operated the flight as a nonstop commercial air tour under 14 CFR Part 91.) Visual flight rules weather conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed for the intended 30-minute local flight, which departed from Helo Kearny Heliport, Kearny, New Jersey, about 1850.

NTSB Preliminary Report: Danbury, TX

On December 31, 2019, about 1415 central standard time, an Enstrom F28A helicopter, N57SJ, sustained substantial damage when it nosed over during a forced landing following a partial loss of engine power. During the nose-over, the tailboom was separated and the main rotor system and fuselage were damaged. The student pilot and flight instructor were not injured. The helicopter was registered to and operated by a private individual under the provisions of Title 14 Code of federal Regulations Part 91 as an instructional flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the flight, which was not operated on a flight plan. The local flight originated from the Salaika Aviation Airport (07TA), Danbury, Texas, at an unconfirmed time.
