Some Progress Made in 2019 for Helicopter Accidents in Key Global Regions

After gathering accident information from countries around the world, the International Helicopter Safety Foundation (www.IHSF.aero) is seeing reductions in accidents and progress for the industry’s objective of safer civil helicopter operations. Preliminary 2019 data from 39 countries show a year-over-year decrease in fatal and total accidents. In addition, the long-term trend remains positive.

NTSB Preliminary Report: Pikeville, NC

On June 18, 2020, at 1700 eastern daylight time, a Robinson R66 helicopter, N4QW, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Pikeville, North Carolina. The pilot was fatally injured. The helicopter was being operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight.

Japan Coast Guard orders two more H225 helicopters

Tokyo, 6 April 2020 – Japan’s largest Super Puma operator, Japan Coast Guard (JCG), has placed a new order of two H225 helicopters. This follow-on order brings JCG’s Super Puma fleet to 15, comprising two AS332s and 13 H225s. Bell V-280 Valor Team Selected to Continue in Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft Competition

Montenegro Air Force Signs Purchase Agreement for Two Bell 505s

Fort Worth, TX - Bell Textron Inc., a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, announced today that the Montenegro Air Force has signed a purchase agreement for two Bell 505 Jet Ranger X’s. These new aircraft will be used to train the Montenegrin military pilots. The agreement also provides that Bell will provide training for three pilots in France and eight technicians at its Bell Training Academy in Fort Worth, TX. Additionally, Centaurium agreed to purchase three Bell 505 aircraft with the Customer Advantage Plan (CAP) Premier Plan. Two of those aircraft will be operated by Mountainflyers for mountain pilot training and aerial photography. The other Bell 505 will be operated by Centaurium as a demonstrator for the Swiss market.

When the nation began experiencing a shortage of hand sanitizer, our Bell Engineering Labs team decided to take matters into their own hands. Working with our Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) team, they were able to follow the World Heath Organization’s formula and produce hand sanitizer using compounds in the lab while the EHS team procured materials and organized distribution.

NTSB Preliminary Report: Calabasas, CA

On January 26, 2020, about 0945 PST, a Sikorsky S76B helicopter, N72EX, crashed into hilly terrain near Calabasas, California. A post impact fire ensued and resulted in a brush fire. The eight passengers and one pilot onboard were fatally injured and the helicopter was destroyed. The helicopter was operated by Island Express Helicopters. Weather at Van Nuys airport, about 14 miles northeast of the site was reported as 1,100 feet overcast with 2 ½ miles visibility. The flight was operated under the provisions of 14 CFR Part 135 under visual flight rules from John Wayne Airport (KSNA), Santa Ana, California, to Camarillo Airport (KCMA), Camarillo, California.

HAI Members: Two Important Financial Resources for COVID-19 Relief
